US data is Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate (SAAR), meaning monthly figures are annualized. Korea data is the sum of domestic sales from all manufacturers based on the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's automotive industry statistics.
Truck sales are used as a read on economic temperature because they record a decision a business actually acted on. In construction, logistics, delivery and small trade work the vehicle is the means of production, so operators only buy when they expect enough demand to justify it. Unlike survey-based sentiment measures, this counts completed purchases, so it reflects spending decisions rather than how respondents happen to feel. This page places U.S. and Korean sales side by side so you can see whether the two markets are moving together or diverging.
The U.S. series is Light Weight Truck Sales from FRED, reported as a seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR). SAAR expresses how many units would sell in a year if the month's pace continued, so the number shown is not the count of trucks sold that month. The Korean series sums domestic sales across all manufacturers from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's automotive statistics, and it is an actual monthly count with no annualisation. Because the two are built differently, compare the direction and size of each trend rather than the absolute levels.
The U.S. light truck category sweeps in pickups and SUVs, many of which are sold to households as passenger vehicles rather than to businesses. That makes it hard to tell whether a rise reflects business investment or a shift in consumer taste. Supply-side disruptions such as chip shortages or strikes can also swing the figures by delaying deliveries, independent of demand. The spread of electric pickups and of subscription and leasing models further weakens continuity with older readings, so it is safer to read the trend across several months than any single one.
